Entry Level Custom Hat (Wool or Rabbit)
A common material used for hat felt is wool, known for its affordability. However, wool felt is highly porous and does not repel water. It serves as a cost-effective option for hat making, particularly suitable for non-rainy conditions. Wool felt tends to lose its shape more easily compared to beaver or rabbit fur, and it is heavier with a rougher texture.
Rabbit fur, an alternative to beaver, offers a more accessible option for hat making. Although it can be felted fairly tight, rabbit fur is more readily available. Utilizing rabbit fur for a hat renders it more affordable and adds a soft touch. However, rabbit fur doesn't felt as tightly as beaver fur, resulting in a thicker hat to achieve the necessary stiffness for maintaining its shape. While it is more susceptible to losing its shape due to the elements and wear, rabbit fur is still notably more durable than wool.
